Elections 2021 – The Vote Shares
Amidst the near constant stream of election results that continue to come in, it is now an opportune moment to consider how the parties have done in terms of the overall share of the vote they have secured.
In Scotland, with all the results for the elections to Holyrood now in, when it comes to the constituency section of the ballot, the SNP has secured 47.7% of the vote. This is in contrast to the 46.5% it secured in the 2016 elections to the Scottish Parliament and the 45% it won at the 2019 General Election.
Again, on the constituency vote section of the ballot, the vote shares for the other parties were as follows:
Labour: 21.6% (down from
22.6% in 2016, but up from 18.6% in 2019)
Conservatives: 21.9%
(down from 22% in 2016, but up from 25.1% in 2019)
Liberal Democrats: 6.9%
(down from 7.8% in 2016, and down from 9.5% in 2019)
Green: 1.3% (up from 0.6% in 2016, and up from 1% in 2019)
As the debate over Scotland’s constitutional future hots up, it is important to note that the combined vote for the unionist parties at the Scottish Parliament of Labour, Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats comes in at 50.4%. This compares to the 49% of the vote won by the SNP and Greens, both calling for a second independence referendum.
In Wales, again with the results for the Senedd now all in, Labour won 39.9% of the votes cast in the constituency section of the ballot. This compares to the 34.7% it won at the 2016 elections to what was then the Welsh Assembly and the 40.9% it won at the 2019 General Election.
For the other parties, on the constituency vote section of the ballot, the vote shares were as follows:
Conservatives: 26.1% (up from 21.1% in
2016, but down from 36.1% in 2019)
Liberal Democrats: 4.9% (down from 7.7%
in 2016, and down from 6% in 2019)
Plaid Cymru: 20.3% (down slightly from 20.5% 2016, but up from 9.9% in 2019)
Meanwhile, Professor John Curtice of Strathclyde University, using the results in so far has projected the national shares of the vote as follows:
Conservatives: 36% (down from 43.6% at
the 2019 General
Election)
Labour: 29% (down from 32.2% in 2019)
Liberal Democrats: 17% (up from 11.5%
in 2019)
Other parties: 18%
