Labour Secures 1 Point Lead in Latest Poll
Deltapoll now gives Labour a 1 percentage point lead over the Conservatives in its latest poll for the Sun on Sunday.
With the fieldwork carried out between the 2nd and 4th December, it puts the Conservatives on 37%, down 3 points since its last poll at the start of November. Labour meanwhile are up 1 point on 38% with the Lib Dems on 10%, up 2 points. Other parties remain unchanged on 15%.
Meanwhile, Ipsos Mori last week published its latest Political Pulse for November.
The key headline, as the pollster notes, see “public favourability towards Boris Johnson at the lowest level since the Ipsos MORI Political Pulse began in 2019. 24% of the public are favourable towards the Prime Minister (-2 points from October) and 51% are unfavourable (+2 points).” This gives him a net favourability score of -27%.
In contrast, 23% of the public are favourable to the Labour Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, with 44% unfavourable, giving him a net score of -21%.
The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak however has a net favourability rating of +4%, followed by the Health and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid, on -11%, and the Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, on -16%.
Ipsos Mori goes on to say: “Elsewhere in the poll we asked the public to rate the policies of the Conservatives and Labour across 14 areas where a score of 10 would indicate that the party had ‘all the right policies’ and a score of 0 meant they had ‘all the wrong policies’. When we look at the proportion of Britons giving each party a score of 6 or above – meaning they have the right policies – we can see Labour leads the Conservatives by 5 points or more on the NHS (+5), public transport (+6), housing (+5) and fighting poverty (+10). The Conservative lead Labour by 5 points or more on managing the economy (+7) and defence / national security (+6).”
The poll finds also that whilst 27% of those responding think the country is heading in the right direction (+3 points from October). 46% say things are heading in the wrong direction (-3 points). 28% think Brexit is having a positive impact on the country (+3 points from October) and 47% say it is having a negative impact (-3). 20% say it has made no difference (+2 points) and 5% don’t know (-2 points).
Meanwhile, in its latest Scottish
Political Monitor, Ipsos Mori finds that support for Scottish independence
is 5 percentage points higher compared with its poll in early May, back to
levels seen last November. 55% of those Scots questioned who provided a
preference said they would vote yes, with 45% saying they would vote no.
