Biden’s Honeymoon Continues

 

It is now a week since Joe Biden became President of the United States, inheriting one of the most challenging in trays of any incoming President in modern history.

After a week which has seen him sign numerous Executive Orders focussed on the country’s response to COVID and reversing many Trump ‘era polices such as the border wall with Mexico and re-joining both the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the World Health Organisation, one poll suggests that the new President’s ‘honeymoon’ continues.

According to data within an ABC News/Ipsos poll 69% of Americans approve of the way the President is handling the response to the COVID-19 pandemic with 81% supporting the new federal mask requirements. This includes 99% of all Democrats who support it, 59% of Republicans and 63% of Independents.

On a number of other policies being enacted by the Biden administration:

77% support a government-wide approach to civil rights and racial justice.

83% support prohibiting workplace gender and sexual orientation discrimination,

55% support reversing the Muslim travel ban.

56% support reversing the exclusion of non-citizens from the Census count.

55% support ending the emergency declaration funding the border wall.

But if all of the above was not enough to be getting on with, President Biden will soon have overhanging him the impeachment trial in the Senate of his predecessor, Donald Trump, due to begin on 9th February.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll 51% of Americans think Donald Trump should be found guilty, 37% believe he should not be convicted and 12% are unsure about how the Senate should vote. 55% meanwhile support Trump being banned from holding elected office again, while 34% said he should be allowed to do so and 11% said they were unsure.

In a sign though of the mountain that President Biden has to climb in securing the unity he spoke so powerfully about at his inauguration this time last week, about six in 10 Republicans told the poll that they still believe the 2020 election was the result of “illegal voting or election rigging.”

Can Labour Look Forward to a Decade in Power?

Speaking at the start of the year the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, spoke of a "decade of national renewal" being the "central, defining purpose" of a future Labour government. Rishi’s Ratings Sink

Rishi Sunak has registered his weakest favourability ratings since becoming Prime Minister according to new polling by Ipsos Mori. It reports that whilst the Labour Leader, Keir Starmer, has a net favourability score of -7, Rishi Sunak’s has sunk to -19. With Boris Johnson continuing to breathe down Rishi Sunak’s neck, Ipsos goes on to note: “More than half of 2019 Conservative voters are favourable to Johnson (55%) while 49% say the same for Sunak. Overall, among 2019 Conservative voters, Johnson scores +29 while Sunak scores +23.   However, Johnson’s lead owes more to falling ratings for Mr Sunak rather than improving ratings for the former PM.” Looking at the parties as a whole, Labour has a net favourability rating of +2 with the Conservatives on -29.
