Conservatives Maintain Lead Over Labour
The Conservatives continue to enjoy a small advantage over Labour in YouGov’s latest poll.
According to the data, which was gathered between 17th and 18th February, in respect of voting intentions for the UK Parliament, 40% opted for the Conservatives down 1 percentage point from its last poll between the 9th and 10th February. Labour are on 37% (up 1 point) with the Liberal Democrats on 7% (up 1 point).
Asked which of Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer they preferred as Prime Minister 34% said Boris Johnson, up 1 point. 30% opted for the Labour leader, down 1 point.
Those questioned were then asked how well, or badly, they felt the UK government is doing in handling the country’s departure from the European Union. Whilst 39% said ‘well’, 50% said ‘badly’.
47% of respondents said that with hindsight the UK was wrong to leave the European Union. This includes 16% of those who voted Conservative at the 2019 election and 10% of those who voted to leave the EU in 2016.
41% said that the country was right to leave the EU. This includes 12% of those who voted Labour at the 2019 election, and 8% of those who voted Liberal Democrat in the same year. 10% of those who voted to remain in the EU in 2016 also said that they felt the UK was right to leave the EU.
Meanwhile, Ipsos Mori has published its latest Issues Index. Asked what they felt to be the most/other important issues facing Britain today, 75% said the pandemic, making it by far the most important issue on the minds of the public. This was followed in second place by the 35% who said the EU/Europe/Brexit and then the 32% who said the economy.
Further polling data has been published also following the publication by the UK government yesterday of its roadmap out of lockdown.
According to Savanta ComRes, 52% are satisfied with roadmap with 17% dissatisfied. 45% say it’s too cautious, 31% say it is about right and 19% say it is reckless. 32% say reopening shops on 12th April is too late with 19% saying it is too early.
YouGov has published a similar snap
poll which has found that 46% of people believe that the plans to relax
lockdown rules have got the balance about right, with 26% saying the plans to
relax them are too quick and 16% saying they are too slow. 63% support
reopening all schools in England from 8th March with 78% supporting
plans that form 29th March two households or groups of up to 6 people
will be able to meet outside, as well as outdoor organised sports facilities
being able to reopen.
