Conservatives Retain Lead Over Labour in Latest Polls
Opinium has published its latest polling for The Observer, with the fieldwork carried out between 25th and 26th March.
The headline voting intentions among those likely to vote and who picked a party they would vote for were as follows:
Conservative – 41%
Labour – 37%
Liberal Democrat – 6%
SNP – 6%
Plaid Cymru – 1%
Green – 5%
UKIP – 2%
Brexit Party – 1%
Other party – 2%
Looking deeper into the figures, what is striking is that among those polled living in constituencies gained by the Conservative Party in the 2019 General Election in England and Wales, 46% now back Labour, with 44% supporting the Conservatives.
Opinium notes that: “Both Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer have seen small drops in their approval numbers. Johnson now has a net approval of +1, down from +7 two weeks ago. 42% approve of the job he is doing (-2) while 41% disapprove (+3). Meanwhile Starmer’s approval is now -5, down from +5. 30% approve of the job he is doing (-4) while 35% disapprove (+6).”
33% also said they believe Boris Johnson would be the best Prime Minister, compared to 27% saying the same about Keir Starmer.
Three months into the UK leaving entirely the orbit of the EU’s rules and regulations, the poll finds that 31% believe in re-joining the European Union with 22% believing that whilst the UK should remain outside the EU it should nevertheless negotiate a closer relationship with it than the country currently has. 19% support the current situation, with 19% also believing that a more distant relationship should be negotiated with the EU.
39% indicated approval for the UK Government’s handling of the pandemic, with 44% disapproving of it.
Deltapoll has also published its latest data for the Mail on Sunday.
With those saying “don’t know” and those who “would not vote” excluded, the headline voting intentions of those questioned between the 25th and 27th March were as follows:
Conservative – 44%
Labour – 36%
Liberal Democrat – 6%
UKIP – 4%
Reform UK – 3%
SNP – 2%
Green – 4%
Other party – 1%
Among
those in constituencies gained by the Conservatives in 2019, support for the
Conservatives and Labour was split evenly at 43% each.
