64% Call for Boris to Stand Down in Latest Poll
As questions over Boris Johnson’s future at Number 10 continue unabated, YouGov has today tweeted a fascinating series of polling data.
When it comes to headline voting intentions, polling for The Times conducted between 13th and 14th January puts Labour on 39%, down 1 point from its last poll carried out between 12th and 13th January. The Conservatives meanwhile are up 2 points on 31%.
It shows also that 63% of people now think the Government is doing badly, 64% think Boris Johnson should stand down and overall, 73% believe he is doing a bad job as Prime Minister.
28% now think Keir Starmer is likely to become Prime Minister at some point, up from 19% who said the same in November.
With the idea that divided parties never win elections as true today as ever, 76% of those polled now think the Conservative Party is divided, up from 57% in November. In contrast, 39% say the same about the Labour Party, down from 47% in November.
All that said, just 24% feel Labour is “ready to take over”, unchanged since December. 53% said the party is not ready to take over as the governing party.
Redfield Wilton’s latest polling meanwhile, conducted just yesterday, gives Labour a 13 point lead, as it polls, when it comes to headline voting intentions, on 43%, up 4 points from 7th January. The Conservatives meanwhile are down 3 points on 30%.
The poll gives the Government a net competency rating of -37%, the lowest rating Redfield Wilton has recorded since it began tracking this question in August 2020. Boris Johnson’s net approval rating of -31% is also the lowest it has ever recorded for him. To rub salt into the wound however, the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak has a net approval rating of +18%.
When it comes to Keir Starmer’s net approval rating, Redfield Wilton notes that this has increased by three points to 0%, representing the highest net approval rating it has recorded for the Labour Leader since April 2021.
42% said they thought Keir Starmer would be the better Prime Minister, compared to 29% who said the same about Boris Johnson. Redfield Wilton goes on to note: “Starmer leads over Johnson when it comes to best embodying the descriptions ‘can build a strong economy’ (36% to 33%) and ‘can tackle the coronavirus pandemic’ (35% to 31%) for the first time we have recorded.”
It
continues: “Further, in a contest between the Chancellor of the Exchequer
and the current Prime Minister, 42% say Rishi Sunak (up 4%) and 24% say Boris
Johnson (down 5%) would be the better Prime Minister for the UK at this
moment—the largest lead we have recorded for Sunak over Johnson on this topic.”
