Americans Back No Fly Zone in Ukraine

As the West continues to grapple with how to prevent President Putin continuing the carnage he is causing in Ukraine, polling points to marked difference in public opinion either side of the Atlantic.

In the United States, a poll by Reuters/Ipsos suggests that despite concerns that such a move could escalate the conflict, 74% of Americans said the US and NATO should impose a no fly zone in Ukraine. 80% also said the US should stop buying Russian oil, despite concerns about the potential impact such a move might have on inflation. Indeed, 62% said they felt that paying more for fuel and gas would be worthwhile if it meant defending another democracy.

81% of Americans would believe that the US should impose further sanctions on Russia, with 72% believing the US should supply the Ukrainians with weapons to fight the Russians.

In contrast however, a YouGov poll in the UK suggests that just 28% of those questioned would support NATO imposing a no fly zone over Ukraine, with 39% opposed to such a move and 33% saying they were unsure.

Polling by Ipsos Mori meanwhile finds that 57% of Britons would support Ukraine joining NATO. 87% indicated that they are now following news about the Russian invasion of Ukraine closely, up form 73% last month. 28% indicated that they would support sending UK troops to fight in Ukraine, up from 17% in January.

In a sign of how well he has handled the current situation, 76% of those questioned said they felt President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine had done a good job of handling the crisis. In contrast, just 45% say the European Union has done a good job, followed by 39% saying the same thing about the UK Government, 37% saying Boris Johnson has done a good job and just 29% who felt the same about President Joe Biden.

Finally, further polling by YouGov suggests that whilst 76% of those Britons questioned were concerned about President Putin launching nuclear weapons,  by a margin of 42%-33%, the public believe it is “unlikely” Russia would launch a nuclear attack against the West.
