UK Public Split on Direct Military Involvement in Ukraine

Opinium has today tweeted the latest headlines from its poll conducted for The Observer between 9th and 11th March.

For headline voting intentions the Conservatives are on 35% (up 1 point since a fortnight ago) with Labour down 1 point on 37%.

For the first time this year, Boris Johnson has taken a lead over the Labour Leader, Keir Starmer, when it comes to who would make the best Prime Minister. Of those polled, 26% preferred Starmer, compared to 27% who opted for Johnson. 32% however feel neither would make the best Prime Minister.

When it comes to Ukraine, 78% of those polled support sending arms and rations to support the Ukrainians, with 68% supporting the donation of Western planes. However, things are much more evenly split when it comes to the idea of Western forces directly supporting the Ukrainians.

Of those Brits questioned, 43% said they would support Western troops being sent to Ukraine, compared to 40% who would oppose such a move. 40% would support the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Ukraine, compared to 39% who would oppose such a move.

53% say that the UK Government has not gone far enough when it comes to economic sanctions against Russia, 52% don’t believe it has gone far enough in accepting refugees and 49% don’t think enough has been done to keep the diplomatic pressure on Russia.

In the US meanwhile a Wall Street Journal poll, as reported by The Hill, shows that: “A majority of voters in a new survey disapprove of President Biden's job performance, even as most give him positive marks for his handling of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

Whilst 42% approved of Biden’s performance as President, 57% disapproved. This is despite half of those polled saying they approved of how he had dealt with Russia, compared to 44% who disapproved.

Asked how they felt the President had handled the crisis in Ukraine, 47% approved of his approach, with 46% disapproving.

79% of those questioned meanwhile supported the decision to ban imports of Russian oil to the United States.
