Young Russians Most Likely to Oppose Invasion of Ukraine Says Poll
The Washington Post this week reported on polling conducted by what it describes as “a group of independent survey research organisations” into Russian attitudes to what is happening in Ukraine.
It reports that 58% of Russians approve of the invasion of Ukraine with 23% opposing it. Interestingly it goes on to note: “Among young people, support for the war is significantly lower, according to the study. In the 18-to-24 age group, 29 percent indicated they back the war, while 39 percent were opposed. Peak support for the war, at 75 percent, was among respondents age 66 and older.”
In Ukraine, polling by the the Kyiv based Info Sapiens organisation has found that 79% of Ukrainians are against the official recognition of the previously occupied areas of the Donbass region as part of Russia. 75%, it says, are against the official recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, and 56% are against the ban on Ukraine’s membership in NATO even if it ends the war.
In a sign of the leadership shown by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, 88% of those polled said they had a positive attitude towards him.
Overall, 67% of those Ukrainians questioned said they were personally willing to put up armed resistance to stop the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
In the UK meanwhile, new polling by YouGov shows that 61% of those polled now think nuclear war is one of the most likely ways the human race will end. In January that figure was 43%.
YouGov goes on to note: “Support for the government developing contingency plans to prepare for nuclear war as an existential threat has risen eight points (now up to 87%) – a rise that was not seen in any of the other contingency plans asked about in our survey.”
Additional
research
by YouGov suggests that just 10% of
Britons believe that the economic actions the West is taking against Russia,
and the military aid being sent to the country, is enough to stop the Russians
from winning. 67% say it is not enough.
