Chancellor’s Poll Ratings Continue to Plummet

Opinium has published its latest fortnightly polling for The Observer.

When it comes to headline voting intentions Labour are now on 38%, with the Conservatives trailing on 34%.

In respect of approval ratings for leading politicians, 53% disapprove of the job that Boris Johnson is doing as Prime Minister, compared to 27% who approve. When it comes to Keir Starmer, 34% disapprove of the job he is doing as Leader of the Opposition, compared to 27% who approve. In a continued sign of the way that the Chancellor’s stock has fallen, 43% disapprove of the way that Rishi Sunak is performing, compared to 28% who approve.

In a further blow to the Conservatives’ reputation as a low tax party, 63% of respondents to the poll say that current levels of tax in the UK are too high.

Meanwhile, with the Government having published this week its energy security strategy, amidst an ongoing debate within the Conservative Party about the role that should be played by onshore wind farms, 78% of respondents said they supported wind farms and turbines as a source of electricity. More notably, 67% said they would support the development of new wind turbines and farms in their local area.

Looking to Scotland, polling by Survation for Ballot Box Scotland suggests that Labour might but set for slight revival in the local elections next month. The poll puts the party on 23% in respect of first preference votes, up 3 points from 2017. The SNP are on 44%, up from 32%. The Conservatives meanwhile have seen there polling figures plummet to 18% from 26% in 2017.

In total, accumulating data on the top 3 preferences provided by those questioned the SNP are on 56% with Labour not far behind on 52%.
