Boris Doing a Bad Job as Prime Minister Say Public in New Poll
After a week which saw 40% of Conservative MPs voting to express no confidence in Boris Johnson, new polling by Ipsos Mori will serve only to embolden those who continue to want the Prime Minister removed from office.
Overall, 49% of those questioned said Boris Johnson was doing a bad job as Prime Minister, compared to 31% saying he was doing well. 50% said the Government has a whole was doing a bad job of running the country, compared to 29% who said it was doing well in this regard.
Asked about the confidence vote in the Prime Minister, 51% of those surveyed said Conservative MPs were wrong to keep Boris Johnson in post, compared to 36% who said it was the right thing to do. Among those who voted Conservative at the 2019 General Election, 26% felt that Conservative MPs were wrong to retain confidence in the Prime Minister.
Overall, 50% would support the Prime Minister resigning, with 29% saying they would oppose such a move.
59% feel it is unlikely that Boris Johnson will win the next General Election, with 64% saying he is unlikely to be able to unite the Conservative Party behind him. 67% feel it is unlikely that he will be able to improve trust in his leadership of the country.
Looking at issues, 54% believe it unlikely that the Government will be able to grow the UK economy whilst 62% say it is unlikely to deliver on the priorities of the British people. 62% feel it unlikely that the Government will cut taxes, whilst 63% feel it unlikely that it will improve the NHS. On the Government’s flagship levelling up agenda, 62% believe it is unlikely to meet its ambitions in this regard. 66% feel it unlikely that the current Government will be able to reduce crime and 69% say it is unlikely to reduce the cost of living.
Ipsos Mori goes on to note: “A key question following the confidence vote is who else might take over? Currently, Britons remain unsure. Keir Starmer is slightly ahead of 10 Conservative options when asked who would do a good or bad job as PM. A third (32%) believe the current Labour leader would do a good job compared to 35% who disagree.
“Among Conservative candidates, Rishi
Sunak comes out on top with 29% who think he would do a good job, however 37%
disagree. 24% think Sajid Javid would do a good job, 24% say Dominic Raab would
do a good job and 21% say Ben Wallace would do a good job. The public are most
likely to think Priti Patel (53%) and Michael Gove (44%) would do bad jobs.”
