Tory Carnage on the Political Markets
With the future of Liz Truss as Prime Minister hanging in the balance, current polling will be weighing heavy on the minds of Conservative MPs. As they do so, they would be forgiven for looking for a strong drink to fortify them.
Polling by Deltapoll finds that when asked how well each of the party leaders are doing, Liz Truss now has a net rating of, -54 with just 18% saying she is doing well. Keir Starmer on the other hand has a net rating of +11 with 48% saying he is doing well.
52% of respondents said they felt a Labour government led by Keir Starmer with Rachel Reeves as Chancellor of the Exchequer would be best for the economy, compared to just 22% saying the same about the Conservatives.
Savanta ComRes has reported that 60% of people feel both Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng are equally to blame for the economic situation the UK faces. What is more, whilst 6% say the former Chancellor was most to blame, 24% pin the blame on the Prime Minister. 71% of those responding say Liz Truss cannot regain the trust of the British people.
Ipsos Mori’s polling gives Labour a 21 point lead over the Conservatives when it comes to headline voting intentions. It puts Labour on 47%, up 7 points since September with the Conservatives on 26%, down 4 points. This is the largest Labour lead Ipsos has recorded since October 2002.
67% of those Ipsos Mori questioned said they were dissatisfied with Liz Truss as Prime Minister, up 38 points since last month. In contrast 38% are satisfied with Keir Starmer, up 7 points.
Redfield and Wilton’s most recent polling gives Labour a 29 point lead, with it on 53% and the Conservatives on 24% when it comes to headline voting intentions. Delving deeper, it reports that less than half, 47%, of those who voted Conservative in 2019 say they would vote for the party again.
It continues: “Prime Minister Liz Truss receives a net approval rating of -48%, down 6 points from our poll on Monday. Yesterday’s poll finds only 14% approving of her overall job performance (-2), against 62% disapproving (+4).
“Among 2019 Conservative voters, a majority (58%) now disapprove of Liz Truss’s job performance as Prime Minister. Only 21% approve. Her net approval rating with 2019 Conservative voters stands at -37%, down 15 points since Monday’s poll.”
Redfield and Wilton conclude in its
analysis: “Keir Starmer (48%, -1) leads Liz Truss (23%, –) by 25 points on
who would be the better Prime Minister at this moment.”
